Inside Out: “Youth in Support of Black Lives Matter”

Project Type

Photo Mural

Date

2021-2022

Prompted to “change the world with art,” French artist JR started The Inside Out
Project in 2011. The goal of the project was to allow independent groups to create
murals, or actions, to “spark global change locally.” Each action consists of large
photographic portraits, displayed together in a public setting. A decade into the
project, over 2,000 actions have been created in 138 different countries.

For our contribution to the project, the South Jersey Artist Collective created a
dialogue with local youth and their families about the viewpoints and discussions
they’ve had around the topic of Black Lives Matter. The 100 youth photographed
represent the diverse families in our community and the diverse discussions had
in households over the last several years.
